Ko Chang, Thailand 7

New Year’s Day

Girls still screaming the “Western” woo-hoo’s.

Guy puking outside my window. Heaving and spewing, heaving and spewing.

Killed enormous cockroach in the shower and cleaned up the lizard shit. Took cold shower, shampoo, soap, clean clothes, packed bag.

Instant coffee in my mickey mouse cup. Scrambled eggs and bacon.

Still people lying on the beach with beers. Bodies strewn about everywhere. Staff sweeping up the mess. Everyone looking crusty.

Returned pink star-shaped alarm clock to front desk. Said thanks “kap coon kap” and “see you next year”. Checked out.

One guy appears to have bagged the blonde Australian model in the peach bikini. They were lying on the beach together. He was the only one smiling 7:30 am at Nature Rocks Restaurant.

Hit the road at 8:30am on schedule. Morning taxis pass only once an hour, so we had to be early. Pick up truck taxi stopped for us, but was full. Sera squeezed in. I stood on the back bumper and held on to the luggage rack for the one-hour trip of up, down and arounds through the jungle to the ferry. The stomach felt fine until we stopped.

Passed car wreck in the ditch.

My new year’s hangover – bad, and getting worse by the minute.

High winds and stormy seas for the ferry ride back to the mainland of Trat province. Waves come over the sides of the boat, splashing the cars, boat rocking side to side. My face – green.

Overall, I was impressed. I went to bed upset, convinced that we’d fuck up, sleep in, and miss our ferry. But we managed it.

Musical memories of Ko Chang:

- great guitar player at Oodies in White Sands playing Hendrix tunes.
- techno dance remix of “land down under” by Men at Work – at least twice a day
- techno dance remix of Back in Black – just wrong. Made me angry. – even worse than Celine Dion covering “you shook me all night long”, if that’s possible.
- techo dance remix of “sweet child of mine”. Why not.
- techno dance remix of just about everything.
- “no woman no cry” 5-10 times per day, depending on how many bars you walked past and how late you stayed up.

I’m going back to a total mess. Checking my email on the beach just brought back most of the stress I was hoping the ocean would wash off of me. My boss doesn’t have work lined up and might be breaking our contract and my agent, MoonJu, whose help I’ll need to negotiate, has quit her job. The lease will also be up on my apartment in two weeks. It’s been rented to someone new without anyone first asking me if I wanted to stay. So I’ll be moving as well. 2008 will be anything but ordinary.
